Our Singapore Songbook is a concert programme organised by the Metropolitan Festival Orchestra in partnership with the Ministry of Education Arts Education Branch and National Arts Council. It is designed to take students on a guided listening journey exploring different songs representing the different races of Singapore. It aims to deepen students' understanding of what it takes to have a multi-cultural society through singing songs written by local songwriters and composers who arranged the music for orchestra.
This year's edition of Our Singapore Songbook was attended by over 8,200 students and teachers from 29 schools.
It is the first time stepping into a concert hall for most of the students and as a performer, we gave our best to make this a memorable experience for the students. The students were very enthusiastic and appreciative of the performance, many of them clapped their hands to the beat as well as waved their arms to show their support. At the last show, one of the students gave a standing ovation and it affirmed me of how music has the power to connect people of different races and generations. It was meaningful playing for the various secondary school students and their teachers and seeing how much they enjoyed the performance (:
